Time for Giving Thanks!

Hello My Friends,

Well, It has been another HUGE gap in the writing curve!!  I am so grateful for the wonderful clients I have had over the past few months.  I have decided that I must post some wonderful images!! They will come very shortly.

Over the past little while, I have been extremely busy with my many projects.  I have also started working again.  I have to admit that in the beginning, I was terrified of adding that to my already crazy schedule.  I have loved being part of the working world again.  I wish that my photography and hats could fill in that gap, however, I am sure they will at sometime,  Baby steps!!

I LOVED going out with this Family!! They are so wonderful and I am happy that they chose me to capture their memories.  We went out of town a short way for this shoot . The lighting was heavenly!! Thank you so much H, family :)
My favorite thing about photography is going out with families.  I have had the pleasure of going out with the P family for the second time.  I enjoy them so much!! I can't even begin to convey to you all how strong and together they are.
I have known K and her family for many years.  Their boy's are so cute and funny!  I am thrilled that I  have been able to go out with them again.  We braved sickness and a slight chill to get these and I think they are fantastic.  K, gives a fantastic hair cut to boot!!

So Grateful!!!!!!!

Sweet Lemon Square

There are times in life when lemons are thrown in your direction.  It is your choice, as an adult, to let it sour your existence or create a sweet lemon square in your soul. I am often asked how I deal with the situations that would make most people raise a white flag. My answer is , it is not easy.  It shouldn't be!  I am a professional at dealing with crappy , life changing experiences.  Its not that I want to be,  I have had more than my share of ruff times. Whether you lose someone special or you loose yourself, it needs to be faced. You can choose to meet it all at once or in small chewable pieces, but you have to deal with it. At every corner there will be someone to put you down , which in turn gives you the option to prove them wrong. Someone will always let you know your doing a bad job , while they stand there with their arms folded, wondering why you won't change for them.  There will always be people pointing fingers at the job your are doing, making you feel worthless, yet they themselves do nothing. These are not the people I want to be like. How about you???

Why am I bringing this s$&t up, you ask? Well, I made a couple hats for a lady who was going to give them as a gift.  They turned out really cute and I was really proud of them.  The lady was in love with them to boot.  Said lady, wrapped them up and off she went to the birthday party.  The mother of the child opened the gift and basically chucked them on the floor and looked at her like,Is that all????  When I was told , my heart broke a little.  Don't people care that someone takes the time to get them a gift?  Doesn't it matter that they had a gift custom made, because they took the time to think of what you liked?  As a artist , both in photography and handicrafts, this is a real kick in the butt with a frozen boot.  When I make something, it comes from my heart. I am, in essence, giving away a little piece of myself with every time I create. Are there really people who are just that ungrateful? When you are passionate about something it cuts like a knife, you feel like you are being attacked. To add to my Qualm, I have had my first ever upset with photography :( I wont really dive into that even though I would love too. It not very professional!

The lesson learned???  The ONLY PERSON you have the control to make happy is YOURSELF!!! I learnt this lesson many years ago, before I was 5, from my father.  The greatest man that will ever walk this fine earth, in my eyes.  For those of  you who know me personally, you know this is true.  He really has had the shitty end of the stick , yet he is really happy. He is the first person to try and make you feel better, even though he doesn't know what to say. He lost his wife (my mom), was in a serious car accident, his father had cancer, his insurance company has screwed him over and he has family members who treated him (and me) like crap while he did his best to make his dying mother comfortable ( could use that frozen boot up their a**). His motto, don't go to bed angry and live each and every day like it is your last.  He is the nicest ,kindest and happiest man, despite bad things happening.  Don't ever let people like that define who you become. You are important enough to choose that yourself :)  Even if know one reads this, I feel better that I at least shared.

Now lets make that lemon square :)

Recipe is as follows:

Crust:
1 cup flour
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup sugar
Pinch of salt
Combine well and press into a greased 9x9 pan and bake for 20 minutes in a 350 F oven.

Custard:
1 Cup sugar
2 tbsp flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1lemon ( juice and zest)
2 beaten eggs
Mix well and pour over the baked bottom layer and bake for another 25 minutes. When cooled sprinkle with icing sugar.

ENJOY :)

As I dream it I can see it!

Every so often I go through a period where I feel stuck.  These are the times where I pick up my camera for a little me therapy.  I go out and shoot just for myself!  No stress. No feeling the pre-shoot jitters. No one to impress but myself.

A while back I asked for a model on my Facebook page.  One that wouldn't mind getting muddy and wet.  I had a good response and chose one that was old enough to take direction.  My friend Tina graciously let me take her daughter out for and evening of photographic fun.  And it was!!  We went to several locations around the Olds area.  I shot just for myself !! While I was out with Ms. L , I thought to myself this is great!!  I have chosen a client that is open to my artistic view's , and letting me be myself through my camera.  It was heavenly!  I really can't say thanks enough!  Although It wasn't exactly what I was trying to get at ( it was far to cold for water shots ) They turned out wonderfully.

I hope they like them as much as I do!

Family Favorites

I am always on the look out for recipes that are good on the wallet , health and taste buds.  I have some picky kids and this makes things difficult at times.  I was searching on the Kraft Canada website and I found one that is certain to be a family favorite.  Here is the link ,   http://www.kraftcanada.com/en/recipes/sweet-citrus-chicken-106052.aspx   , give it a try and let me know what you think.

I am always so honored to get something that is special. Recently, I inherited a wooden butter bowl, from my husbands parents.  It has inspired me to try my hand at making butter.  On Monday I will be going to the grocery to buy some heavy cream , I can't wait to taste it.  I was raised by my Grandparents so I have learned many things that kids my age wouldn't have learned.  I think this is something my kids will get a kick from and It will bring back so many great childhood memories.

It is less than a month until we surprise the kids with another Disney trip.  We are going for their birthdays and our Anniversary .  I could really use a holiday!! I will be continuing on my 365 and will post soon.

Cheers

The Joy of Love

I have decided to partisipate in a new challenge :)  It will run nicely with my 365 journal.  This one is brought to me by a Kelly Willette , you can find her here http://willettedesigns.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=dcb16456c382f72009ff2f6bc&id=1ae7bffbbe&e=a54a9549ae.

This is my " What they do" image. SOOC.  All natural light , in front of a south west window.

Our first assignment is to document our subject doing, " what they do".  I had chosen to photograph my youngest doing his favorite thing,  lounging in is pj's while playing with his cars.  At the bottom of Kelly's e-mail there was a link to watch a fantastic tidbit on finding the light in our home and catch lights.  I know my element of comfort isn't in my house , however I do enjoy the idea.  So , away I went !  I tried to pay attention to catch lights and had no trouble " finding the light ". My subject was willing for a moment and I cought an acceptable image.  Hope you enjoy :)

A New Look !

Hello Again,

A little while ago I had the honor of participating in a one-on-one workshop with Kandis at www.wishworkshops.blogspot.com  I cannot say enough good about her!!!  She was so kind and her teaching abilities go above and beyond.  If any of you are having trouble mastering technique in photoshop, she is your girl.  Very affordable as well.  I just wanted to share a before and after picture edited with her technique.  I would also like to let you know that she is having a great contest right now.  Go and check out her stuff :)

This in my SOOC image converted into jpeg....

This is the edited version with Kandis' teachings.  A huge difference!  Thank you Kandis , I think you have definitely changed the way I will edit from here on in :) www.wishworkshops.blogspot.com

I know I am a slow blogger!

I have been rather slow again, at keeping up my blog. I have vowed before to do better. Im just so busy and happy , I now have time to share!!

These pictures were taken this summer.  I have a family friend who has this fantastic farm.  Theres a huge tire pile and an old truck , one million feet of rustic fences and old wooden sheds.  I love it and they have been gracious enought to let me have free range on it.  Any how , we went out to their farm and had a hour or two of fun together and the boys were absolute dolls!!

I love to go out with families who are willing to just be themselves.  They walk away with happiness in their hearts and pictures to prove it. Thanks you A & C for letting me spend some time with you !

I was so excited when I was asked to do this wedding!  I know alot of people on both sides of this family and they were all so much fun!  It was a very busy day but everyone was so relaxed.  They are truly ment to be together.  It was a fun group to be around and they never argued once :) A & A , I can't wait to see what life has in store for you!

Is It Just Me?

Wow, is it just me or is time flying by at mock chicken???? Things have really picked up for me. Besides my regular responsibilities of mom, wife and parent council president. My word of mouth advertising has worked. I have gotten two catering jobs over the past three weeks and My photography is doing well also. I am so excited to go to my Photography weekend in Banff. I am hoping to gather alot of information on the business end of things. I feel that is where I am lacking. Now that my youngest is almost 3 I feel like there is a certain freedom coming about my young life. I think my fear of failure has subsided and that I am ready for my life as a professional photographer.

I Have committed to helping out a local man and his family. Kent Pankow, has been living with brain cancer since 1998. He has been on a drug therapy that is now covered by our government but still costing his family $9000.00 per month. There is something very sick about that. We live in a country that boasts free healthcare..... Why the heck is he being forced to pay for this drug even though the people he sits beside get it for nothing??? God forbid you get a cancer that is not covered or you may be in the same boat!!! I will donate $500.00 from each wedding package booked from now until the end of may and %20 of my regular bookings aswell. I am hoping to have a few bookings to help out.

Spring is here, I can tell because my chives are three inches tall, he he!! The joys of living in a province such as Alberta, I have chives today but they might be frozen by tomorrow. I have been thinking about funny things people come up with and remembered a phrase my grandpa used to say, only because it has been so windy here. " It must be windy" he used to say " The horses have there butts to the wind" he'd giggle " When their arses start to whistle, we'll put them in the barn". I have no idea why I am telling you this except for the fact its really funny. I think we could all use a really good laugh! Soon my kids will be out of school and we will be running around the country getting in our family visits. I am so happy for the sunshine, It was a very long winter!

I have a few more pictures for you and them I will say goodbye for now!

NEWS NEWS NEWS CONTINUED

I have no idea what hapened there, oops :) So I am litterally jumping for joy at this oppertunity. We will be staying at the Rimrock hotel in Banff. It will be four days of photography bliss. Here are the links http://bowesphotography.com/ and redleafblog.com.

A friend of mine offered an oppertunity to speak to her grade 8 class about digital photography. It was alot of fun and I think they actually got something from it. They wern't a bad croud at all! Very nice indeed.

I have another catering possibility in May,2010. I am hoping that I get it cause we are saving for our trip to Disney World in October. So many great things to be thankful for. I baked 4 dozen cinnamon buns for a local grade 3 class and I have a regular " best buns in the world" clientel. All in all I am a happy girl ( except for the whole canceled quilting class).

I hope that you all get a chance to look at my Shelfari. What a neat way to share your reading likes and don't likes. A few of the ladies in my bookclub have been talking about it so there I was on the site adding all my details. Man, where there ever alot of books I had forgotten I read. Many more were added to my list aswell.
I have a few new photos to share aswell. They are of my daughter. My kids are not friends of my camera so it is nice for me to actully get a couple here and there.
Thanks for Listening!

NEWS NEWS NEWS

Ok, so I am all about busying myself ( I'm not busy enough,LOL!) just to see how much I can take. I'm going to admit something now and I hope it falls upon understanding ears. I signed myself up for a quilting class at a local store in Olds. So very excited as this is something I have wanted to learn (correctly) for along time. I get home from picking up my kiddlets from school and there is a message on my phone. THE CLASS IS CANCELED DUE TO ENROLLMENT........ So, I am totally dissapointed!! How can that be that in a town of 6000? Did they think there would be a line up??? I'm thinking that 2 people in this day and age that want to learn how to quilt, pretty good! There is my vent.

On a brighter note, I have enrolled in a photography class. I am thrilled about it. It takes place in June of this year, in Banff, Alberta. Dana bowes will be there from Bowes Photography as well as Red Leaf Studios. Lots of other greats in the industry. A HUGE DEAL FOR ME!!!!( I am jumping for joy) So, the countdown is on for me.

New Business Card and Water Mark

Well here it is folks, my newly designed card and Water Mark. RedgwellPhotography, freezing moments and capturing time. I did it all by myself and I am pretty proud of myself!

I have been thinking pretty hard about my next step and as I was doing that I received a facebook message. This was a message I was thrilled to get because I haven't really advertised my photography to much. It was a recommendation! I will be heading out west in April to do a wedding photo shoot. I am so excited about it! I will do a blog post on it shortly after I have finished it.

I am still preparing to do the lighting workshop in Calgary and I am hoping to pick one more. Not really sure what though. I think it will be good for me to get out and meet other people who are in the same field. I enjoy the company and hope to learn from others a the same time. I think it is much more solid then books all the time.

Over the last little while I have made allot of system upgrades. I purchased a new laptop, computer, CS4, a wacom bamboo and a brand new Canon printer. Subscribed to a few magi zines to keep up with things.

Cant wait for the coming year. I am thinking about a contest of some sorts, I'm not sure how well they work or what my idea would be behind it. A possibility for sure.

Meanwhile, I have a dinner for 70 people at the Elementary School tomorrow. I am cooking ham and scalloped potatoes, Greek salad, homemade buns and fruit fondue for dessert. It is going to be really good! I hope everyone enjoys it.

Any ideas for a contest ?

Wedding In May with Family!

I traveled to a little town outside of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in May of 2009. It was my cousins wedding and my daughter Keira was the flower girl. It was great to meet new friends and catch up with family I haven't seen in years. I took the photographs for her and her husband. It was and honour! Quilting is a major component of my heritage. I had to get a picture of the shoes ,along with the pearls she wore , on an heirloom quilt. It was a great time and the weather was very nice. The bride ended up getting cooked like a lobster!

Well, I have decided that I need to create a new letterhead. One that people will look and and say " Oh that's RedgwellPhotography". I have no idea how to do that ! I am hoping to get a good book asap! Any suggestions? I have got to buckle down and concentrait on how I want to portray myself as a photographer? What will set me apart and how do I make it mine? These are all big questions to be answered. I feel like a baby learning to walk!

Is Anyone There?

I am slowly getting the hang of this blogging thing! Have no clue if anyone is reading it, but I'm hopin. I appreciate being able to come down to my computer, let the kids attack each other, write peacefully into the night, yeah right!! I actually have decided a few things about the path I am taking. I carry fear with me!! Not a bad thing though, it is a motivation for me. My one year plan in a nut shell, Photography, the end.

The Pictures above are from an engagement photoshoot I did for a friend in Calgary, Alberta. A cute idea from the future bride! She is from here and Her man is from Ireland hence the mountie and the lepricaun... I had so much fun that day. We really just farted around and got amazing shots. They are a very playful couple, destined for an excitement filled life.

I am trying to decide which classes I would like to take to gather information. After dealing with a bridezilla of sorts ( food not photography), I am putting my foot down, I will not write a 4 page apology either! I am totally worth putting my effort in to. What was I talking about? Oh yes, classes. So I think I am going to go to one being held in Calgary. A friend of mine, Jenny Jardine, is helping with. It is all on lighting which will benefit me greatly. I hope the dates will work out in my favor. The teachings are of the great Tri-Coast and its on TTL flash systems for NIKON and Canon cameras. Yeah! an exciting decision for me.

I just love photography and people and art so It fits. I have lots of equipment to keep me busy. I have my two weddings booked for the summer. Things are looking up!

Bring on The Salsa!

I know that I have promised my salsa recipe and here it is. This is a huge thing for me! I usually don't give away my favorite recipes. I figured why not, I'm not the only one in the world eating it and it is probably the same as someone elses.

30 tomatoes peeled and chopped
2 green bell peppers
2 red bell peppers
10 cups chopped onions
10 cloves garlic
4-5 yellow banana pepper or 1 cup chopped jalapenos
1/2-3/4 cup sugar
2 cups vinegar or lemon juice
8 teaspoons pickling salt
2 teaspoons black pepper
2 large cans tomato paste

Simmer 1 1/2 hr, stirring often, at the end of cooking time add 1/2 bunch of cilantro if desired.Jar and process, 35 minutes for pint jars and 45 minutes for quart jars.Makes about 17 pints

It really is good and doesn't last long around my house so I hope someone will enjoy it.

Salsa Shmalsa!

Well, clearly I have left you hanging! I have had many things going on since my last post. Some good and some sad and bad. I promise I will get to my salsa recipe sometime.

My Grandma, the most profound person in my life, passed away on the ninth of January, 2010. I was blessed to have her as a mother and a friend, although some will never agree, she understood me like no other. I came home form our family holiday in Flordia, we had a great visit and she never woke up. I think she was waiting for us to be home. It has left me extremely sad yet peacefull. I am not sure how, but thats how I explain it! My Grandma was very proud of all my accomplishments so, I have decided to jump in with both feet. No looking back, life is for the living.

I am happy to say that my photography is slowly taking off..... I have two weddings booked in July, deposits in hand, very excited. I am thrilled that I get to be part of such monumentious occasions in peoples lives. I have, however, struggled with the matter of price. There is almost always someone who will do it for less and many who do it for more. The whole " whats my time worth"? Of course I am partial to believe my time is priceless.... but........I have to be realistic and hope I will be picked because they love my work and for no other reason.

In deciding that I want to make a go of my passion, I have felt a huge weight lifted from my shoulders. I can now just say, I am a mother, and wife and a photographer. Everything else WILL follow.

With that being said here are a couple of my latest!

All the Excitement!!!

Well ,I have decided that I need to be more diligent already with this hole blogging thing. I debated on blogging about my salsa recipe but have decided to make that my next post...

I have had a very crazy week! As always I have so much on the go. For those of you who are reading and havnt a clue who I am, this is not unusual for me. I have offically made my July a very busy month... 3 weddings in 3 weeks and not only for pictures. I have two catered dinner's to provide food for 150 people each. Things are looking up!!!

As the Christmas season fast approaches I am overwelmed with excitment. I cant wait to do my baking for one thing. I will be getting some seamless paper to take indoor portraits. All together this means I get to do many things I love. My kids are already chattering about the thing they think Santa may bring. They are absolutly sure he has thought of them because they have already seen him departing our local Wal-Mart. Little do they know the excitment that we have in store for them. We have booked a trip for us all to Disney World, Yeah! We will be leaving Christmas day and they will not know where we are going until we get there. I will be needing good ideas for our scavenger hunt to Flordia so if you have any please feel free to spout.

I have a new lens baby that has been a fun little lens to play with..... I cannot wait for spring to return so I can get outside and get down and dirty with this lens.
Until next post........

My Fall Activities!!

As some of you have seen on my Facebook page, I have started my annual canning ritual. It feels really nice to get back into it after taking the last two years off. The veggie picture is a small part of my harvest! I love to garden and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. It is a small piece of therapy for me. I will post some more picture of that soon.

I have also been crocheting up a storm. I have been making baby touques. I love how this one turned out.

The start of somthing new.....

Well....... I am not sure why I am starting another addicting habbit. I guess this will be a journal of sorts and a way for you my friends to see what is going on. Let me start bytelling you all that I am not an english teacher and my writing skills will prove that. I just hope you enjoy!

I am trying all these new things and that is what is exciting for me. I have joined a book club and made some new friends there . It had also gotten me back into somewhat of a social life. I realie how much I misse the people I went to school with. My efforts on the Parent Council are a non-stop thrill :) I actually really like having alot of things going at one time. I went to the farmers market here in Olds not as a customer but a retailer. I was in a magazine! I have hopefully got my first outside of the family catering job and started to do small order custom baking. Yes, I am a try it all kinda gal.

This blog is going to be about all of me not just my photography. Even though I secretly want nothing more than that area of my live to pick up. It is slowly getting there and I am so gratful for that. I will also post things about my favorite recipes and crafts.

So heres to starting somthing new!!!
